Stuttgart – To mark the automobile's 125th birthday, Mercedes-Benz is organizing numerous events in downtown Stuttgart under the banner “Stuttgarter Sternstunden” as part of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg's Automobile Summer 2011. The company which invented the automobile is staging a varied programme for young and old to thank the region for its loyal support over the past 125 years. Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars Sales and Marketing, explains the idea behind the Stuttgart All-Star Festival as follows: "This week of special events is our way of thanking all the people from Stuttgart and the local region. The people who work for us, our many suppliers and, of course, our customers. They have all played an important role in enabling us to shape the history of the automobile with passion and innovative drive throughout our 125-year history."
"mb! Lounge" is the focal point of the “Stuttgarter Sternstunden” at Schlossplatz Square
Covering 1500 square metres, the "mb! Lounge" offers interesting insights into the present and future world of the Mercedes-Benz brand, defining features of which are modern designs, mobility concepts with future viability and a commitment to the principles of sustainability.
For children and young people at the age of five to 20 years, interesting workshops and talks will take place in cooperation with Genius, Daimler's young knowledge community, and the international PANGAEA expedition. They will discover how a fuel cell works as they play, for example. At the PANGAEA workshops, young participants in the expedition will report on their experiences as environmental ambassadors and describe their personal experiences on one of the largest expedition ships in the world.
On Friday and Saturday evening and Sunday morning the mb! Lounge will host talks on topical issues in cooperation with the Stuttgarter Zeitung newspaper. With Tanja Bülter in the chair, prominent figures such as German national football team coach Jogi Löw and PANGAEA expedition leader Mike Horn will discuss motivation and passion with other guests, also covering social topics such as environmental protection and urban development.
Kick-off at the Mercedes-Benz Arena
The sporting highlight of the five-day event will be a star-studded international football match at the converted Mercedes-Benz Arena. On 10 August 2011 the German men's national team will meet Brazil at the venue. As the long-standing general sponsor, Mercedes-Benz is delighted at the prospect of this classic encounter taking place at the converted Mercedes-Benz Arena.
Major open-air concert with “Placebo” and “30 Seconds To Mars”
A musical highlight within the “Stuttgart Sternstunden” is planned for Thursday evening at the Schlossplatz Square. With “30 Seconds to Mars” and “Placebo”, Mercedes-Benz will be presenting two coveted international bands onto its stage at the heart of the state capital. Both alternative rock bands are promising an unforgettable show, with frontmen Brian Molko (Placebo) and Jared Leto (30 Seconds to Mars) who are well known for their unique live performances. “The Words”, who was selected through the Mercedes-Benz “Mixed Tape” Young Talent Program, will be opening the concert. Over 30,000 spectators are expected to attend. Admission will begin at 16:00.
Motorsports live
At the Stuttgart Sternstunden’s Family Day, on Sunday beginning at 12:30, Michael Schumacher, the current Formula 1 Silver Arrow racer and Nico Rosberg, as well as Mercedes-Benz DTM drivers will be present at the event. Autograph sessions with the pilots as well as interviews on stage will rank among the day’s highlights. For lovers of fast cars, Mercedes-Benz will be exhibiting current and historic Silver Arrows all around the mb! Lounge. A varied program with racing simulators, pit stop competitions, ‘smart ed’ electric car test drives, contests and live music will make for an unforgettable day for both the young and the young at heart. Even the littlest of visitors will have an opportunity to put their driving skills to the test – on a bobby car track.
